If an American goes to medical school in Italy can they still practice in the US

If an American goes to medical school in Italy can they still practice in the US?
I've always wanted to spend an extended period of time in Italy and think it would be great to go to school there. If I go to medical school there will I still be able to return to the US and practice?

In the US you have to apply and receive a medical license from the state where you will practice medicine. For example from the State of California Medical Board the key paragraph states, "While the review of applications filed by international graduates is more complex, delays usually are the result of education and training which does not meet the standard required in law and which therefore must be remediated. Other extensive delays occur as applicants try to obtain documents from foreign institutions or when certified translations are needed." Hope that helps.

In theory? Yes. In practice? It will be much more difficult. And do you speak fluent Italian? You'd need to.
